Railways conducted “Massive Shramdan” drive, focus on collection of plastic waste

Indian Railways undertook a drive of “Massive Shramdan”on September 17 with main focus on “Collection of Plastic Waste”.

  • This drive with its main focus on the collection of plastic waste aims to create awareness for a greater impact against single-use plastic. Also aims at enhancing cleanliness, through the collection of plastic waste from all railway premises.

Jai Ram Thakur launches Mukhya Mantri Seva Sankalp Helpline 1100 for rapid redressal of public grievances

Himachal Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur launched Mukhya Mantri Seva Sankalp Helpline 1100 for the speedy and time bound redressal of public grievances by effective use of latest technologies.

  • Thakur said that over 35,000 public grievances have been redressed in the Jan Manch and now going a step forward, the State Government has started this helpline to ensure that the people would not require to even to go to Jan Manch for redressal of their grievances.

Hyderabad-Karnataka region renamed ‘Kalyana Karnataka’

Fulfilling a long standing demand of the people of Hyderabad Karnataka region, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced that it has been renamed as ‘Kalyana Karnataka’ and a separate secretariat would be established for its development.

Arunachal Pradesh CM dedicates Dikshi Hydroelectric Project to people of state

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu dedicated the Dikshi Hydroelectric Project to the people of the state.

  • The 24 Mega Watt Hydroelectric Project has been installed at Dikshi Village in West Kameng District. It is a Run of the River project constructed on the river Phudung by Devi Energies Private Limited.

At 17.5 million, Indian diaspora largest in the world: UN report

India is the leading country of origin of international migrants in 2019 with a 17.5 million strong diaspora. The International Migrant Stock 2019, a dataset released by the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, provides the latest estimates of the number of international migrants by age, sex and origin for all countries and areas of the world.

  • The report says that India hosted 5.1 million international migrants in 2019, less than the 5.2 million in 2015.

Delhi Police’s ‘Tatpar’ app launched to facilitate delivery of citizen-centric services

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal launched ‘Tatpar’ app, developed by the Delhi Police, which is a one-stop destination for access to over 50 citizen-centric services.

  • The app amalgamates all the websites and mobile applications of Delhi Police, and over 50 services which can now be accessed with a single touch in the app.
  • Through the app, citizens can navigate to their nearest police station, traffic pit and prepaid taxi booth.

5th International Ramayan Festival organized in New Delhi

The 5th International Ramayan Festival organized by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), in New Delhi. ICCR was established with the vision of propagating Indian culture and its values to the whole world.

Rajnath Singh becomes 1st Defence Minister to fly in LCA Tejas

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh becomes the first defence minister to fly in the indigenously-built light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas. He flew in the Tejas fighter aircraft from the HAL airport in Bengaluru.

Sri Lanka unveils South Asia’s tallest tower

Sri Lanka unveiled South Asia’s tallest tower, costing over $100 million, 80% of which has been funded by China under the controversial Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

  • The 350-metre-tall 17-storey Lotus Tower, located in the heart of Colombo city.
  • The tower spread over an area of 30,600 sq. metres. The project which began in 2012 under the then-president Mahinda Rajapakse.


BANKING & FINANCE

Banks’ 2018-19 savings deposits up at Rs 39.72 lakh crore: RBI

Indian private and public sector banks (PSBs) had aggregate savings deposits of Rs 39.72 lakh crore as on March 31, 2019, while foreign banks had a share of Rs 58,630 crore, according to RBI data published in the Handbook of Statistics on Indian Economy 2018-19.

  • The total savings deposits with commercial banks, including foreign ones, in 2018- 19 stood at Rs 40.31 lakh crore, up from Rs 36.55 lakh crore in 2017-18, the data showed.

India Post expands speed post service to 6 new foreign countries

India Post expanded speed post service to six new foreign destinations in Asia, Europe and South America. The Department of Posts has announced commencing of International Speed Post (EMS) Service to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Ecuador, Kazakhstan, Lithuania and North Macedonia.

  • EMS or Express Mail Service is a premium service that enables its users to send documents and merchandise faster and with the added facility of being able to track the movement of the item on the internet.

Dinesh Mongia retires from all forms of cricket

Indian all-rounder Dinesh Mongia announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on September 18. Mongia, 42, last played for India in an ODI against Bangladesh on May 12, 2007.

Vinesh Phogat won the bronze medal at the Wrestling World Championships held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.

Karolina Pliskova beats Petra Martic in Zhengzhou Open to win her fourth title of 2019

World number two Karolina Pliskova beat Croatia’s Petra Martic 6-3 6-2 in the final of the inaugural Zhengzhou Open on Sunday to win the 15th WTA singles title of her career and her first in China.

US swimmer Sarah Thomas criss-crosses English Channel in 54-hour

American breast cancer survivor Sarah Thomas became the first person to swim across the English Channel four times non-stop in a 54-hour feat of endurance.

Robert O’Brien has been appointed as the National Security Adviser of United States of America. He will replace John Bolton as the NSA of US.

ADB president Takehiko Nakao resigns

Asian Development Bank (ADB) said its president Takehiko Nakao has announced his resignation which will be effective from January 16 next year. He became the president of ADB on April 28, 2013.

Anand Kumar felicitated with Education Excellence Award 2019

Super 30 founder and noted mathematician Anand Kumar has been felicitated in the US with a prestigious Education Excellence Award 2019.

  • The Foundation For Excellence (FFE) awarded him on the occasion of the organisation’s 25th anniversary.
  • Anand has been running a highly innovative Super 30 programme for the last 18 years. He mentors 30 students free off cost through a year-long residential coaching for India’s premiere IIT-JEE.

V K Yadav, Chairman of Railway Board awarded with Eminent Engineers Award

Vinod Kumar Yadav, Chairman of Railway Board has been awarded with the Eminent Engineers Award.

  • The award was presented at the special event to mark the 52nd Engineers’ Day organised by the Institution of Engineers in New Delhi. The award was for his outstanding contributions in the field of engineering.

Documentary film based on life of Uttarakhand farmer nominated for Oscars

Moti Bagh, a documentary film based on the struggle of a farmer in a remote Uttarakhand village, has been nominated for the Oscars.

  • The film, based on the life of Vidyadutt Sharma, a farmer living in Pauri Garhwal region, also won the 1st prize at the International short film festival in Kerala. This documentary film was directed by Nirmal Chandra Dandriyal.
